We decided again to jump into another winter adventure in 2026 going up north to Finland with our own car using the ferry from Travemünde to Helsinki and then the night train to Rovaniemi.
The weeks before were filled with magnetic storms, beautiful auroras even visible throughout Europe and a grippy cold winter in northern Germany and Finland.
Well, until we started our journey. When we arrived in Rovaniemi it was around minus 23°C and the temperatures were about to rise. Now, after completing our 10th day in Lapland including two day in Alta Norway we are in Ivalo where in March 2019 we had -31°C and beautiful auroras and today it was around -2°C and the skies are grey and overcast and the sun activity is currently low.
It is as it is and we enjoy the days hiking, snow shoeing and relax. Less driving at night, more sleep to recover.
Tomorrow we will be leaving Lapland and head slowly south were next week the ferry will bring us back to Travemünde.
Luckily during our first two nights in Lapland we experienced some nice auroras.
